Description
This was sitting on the shelf for a while and I almost didn't finish it. I am glad I did finally. It is a dwarf looking for a tree to chop down. Inspired by the game Dwarf Fortress.
Although it is a bit weird, I like the weirdness of it. The objects seem flat but on separate layers. I think it sort of looks like everything is cut out of paper and stacked on top of each other, but at the same time it seems to express a lot of depth and space.

What you described in the description about paper cut outs is exactly how I see this painting. It's like a little lightbox fantasy story.
The composition by itself is already impressive, not even to mention the clever use of details. The composition of trees thin out as they get closer to the dwarf character which makes him stand out well despite the fact that there is a limited colour palette. The details are cleverly placed to add depth and although it seems simplistic, all the elements work perfectly well together to express an intriguing scene.
As for a suggestion, I'd say the dwarf character looks a little stiff. It seems more like he spotted his enemy in the distance than looking for a tree to chop down. If he were stroking his beard and looking thoughtfully at the nearest tree then the description would be more convincing. Perhaps he could even have the axe flung over his shoulder to indicate that he is casually searching for the perfect tree. If perhaps the intention with this pose was to indicate that he has found the tree of his dreams and is about to start chopping, it would make more sense to have him standing closer to a tree.
