Kashyyyk - Wookiee Planet

Description

Long, long ago. On planet Earth. I read a Star Wars trilogy by Timothy Zahn which I believe is the "Thrawn Trilogy" as I just looked it up. Now it's been a long time, but somewhere in those books I remember Zahn depicting the Wookiee planet Kashyyyk with giant trees like skyscrapers, and the wookiees sort of climbing around like animals as well as living in harmony with modern technology.

In the movies they always portray this differently, but this is my best attempt to portray what I saw in my imagination from that scene in the book.

Side notes:

Made in GIMP with Wacom Bamboo. Total work hrs about 2 days by the time it was said and done. I struggled a bit with perspective at first, I am trying to get away from the "one point perspective" which has become a trap for me, but I am happy overall with the perspective in this "compared to my usual standards". And next time hopefully better.

I would love some feedback, crit, etc. Definitely room for improvement. I could easily spend another day on it but I feel as though you have to draw the line somewhere. And for now it gets across the original impression I wanted to convey, and with quite a bit of detail to boot.

Trivia Notes: During making this I learned that the name of the Wookiee planet is Kashyyyk and it is spelled "Wookiee" not "Wookie" :)

Hello, I'm commenting from CommentWars!

First of all, I love the colors you put into this piece. The lush greens and browns are slightly muted by the fog, which gives it a calming, almost mysterious effect and draws the viewer into the artwork. Green and brown, the two main colors in this, are two colors that go very well together, especially when they aren't too saturated. A forest scene is perfect for this, and you did really well putting them together.
Now let's talk about the blue machine in the center of the piece. I get the feeling this is supposed to be the center of attention in the piece, at least slightly. Although you did a good job of not having the blue colors clash with the brown and green, I think it blends in a little too much. I had to look at the picture for a second or two before I focused on it. To fix this, one thing you could do is make the blue a little brighter, since, like the other colors, it doesn't appear very saturated at all. You can also put faint blue reflections on the tree trunks around it, since I'm guessing it's made of metal, and therefor would reflect light onto other surfaces.
Now let's talk about perspective. I actually really like the perspective you used in this, because it gives a feeling of being off balanced or being free fall, especially since the trees nearer to the back are tilted a bit to the side. I'm not sure if that's what you were going for, but it really works here. You said you were trying to get away from the 'one point perspective' trap, but for this I think you used perspective very well. Honestly, though, I think a one point perspective would work well for this, because it could further emphasize that "falling" feeling. You could also make it work with multiple vanishing points, though.
The last thing I want to talk about is the texture, especially on the metal. You did a good job making the texture on the trees; it's pretty detailed, especially in the center tree, but it's stylized and unique. I think it could benefit from having the same sort of texture on the metal items, although it wouldn't be the same texture as the trees, of course. You could look up references of pieces of metal, and how they reflect light and what their texture is.
Anyway, I hope this helps! Let me know if you have any other questions.
